Hey! I am sure you didn’t notice that I dropped off but I decided to take a break from posting my meal plans when we finished our first round of P90X. During my break I have researched different food “stuff”… I think I have mentioned I have hypothyroidism but have also learned that I have Hashimoto’s disease (an autoimmune issue linked to hypothyroidism) it makes you feel well…terrible and the symptoms vary by person. I was convinced to mitigate as many of the symptoms as possible but didn’t want to take more medicine and was feeling frustrated because my blood tests kept coming back with lower than normal T4 counts and my doc kept upping my medication with little results.
I started examining what I was putting into my body to see if I could do anything else. Here is what I learned, a lot of food we think is good for us really is not. Let’s talk about some of the big ones:
Grains – In my opinion, we really don’t need any refined grains and could do without whole grains. Here is why: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/why-grains-are-unhealthy/#axzz1vRG15sXa
Dairy – I love a good glass of nice, cold milk and drool at the sight of any of the delicious, handmade ice cream shops that dot the Seattle area BUT it really isn’t that great for us. It is linked to allergies, ear infections, IBS (and more) and about 75% of the population’s bodies just don’t process milk completely. Need more info? Soy – this one is a bit controversial (as if the others aren’t! ha!) and a matter of debate, especially for those of us with thyroid issues. Mayo clinic says there is no direct link to soy issues and thyroid diseases http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hyperthyroidism/AN00454 but some suggest that suggest that soy reduces the body’s ability to absorb thyroid medicine.http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=17011
Ok, I could go on and on but instead I will tell you what I am doing about it… I am focusing on preparing food for my family based on organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed/grain free/free roaming/wild caught animal and fish proteins and omitting processed foods, grains/gluten, dairy, soy, legumes, most sugar and all vegetable oils (replacing those with olive and coconut oil). What?? No pasta? No rice? No bread? No beans? Yup, you read me right. In fact, I also learned this is what is called a Paleo Lifestyle/Diet. So if you are still reading and interested, going forward my meal plans will be designed with these pieces in mind.
I know what you are thinking… has it helped? YES!! I can honestly say that I have NEVER felt better. My energy is restored, my foggy brain is gone, I no longer feel like I need an afternoon nap every day and my motivation is back. I have also seen benefits in my body composition and have lost most of the tummy weight I thought was a gift from my kids I would never be able to lose. So despite all the controversy around whether or not we need grains or soy or dairy I can say for me, I don’t need it. I don’t even miss it! I haven’t even had any cravings for any of that stuff.
